My Experience with RSS Feeds

Learning how to use RSS feeds this week was both confusing and exciting. I did not know how RSS feeds worked, or what they even were. Setting up my own RSS feed is actually quite useful. Instead of looking through multiple sites for news and information of interest, I can constantly receive that information without having to look for it.

The item of interest from my feed reader was an article on College Blender about ways that students can save money. This was interesting because it was realistic and relatable for me, as well as probably almost all other university students. In fact, I have actually already tried/experienced some of the methods mentioned, such as taking on roommates and buying used textbooks. These are the type of blogs/articles I would like to continue receiving updates for because topics related to education and money are very helpful to me as a student.

Weekly Report & Reflection 2

Where I see myself 5-10 years from now is drastically different from where I am now. In five years from now, I’d like to be happily married, living alone with my husband, working a full-time job in the field I am studying now, and have a car that I am proud to be driving (not only because it’s nice, but because I’d have bought it myself). Ten years from now, I envision myself as a mother and wife. I would like to have a business in the field that I was working in, a luxurious car bought with my hard-earned money, and a happy and satisfying life in regards to finances, relationships, and health.These goals are different from the life I am living now because I feel I am not at the age to be married yet, I drive a Pontiac that my parents bought me, I am working part-time in a restaurant, and I do not feel at all accomplished or satisfied with where I stand in my life in terms of finances, relationships, or health.

In order to achieve my goals and get to where I want to be, I will have to study hard to get my degree and work even harder to prove myself in my field of work. To do well in this last course and complete my degree, I will need to utilize all the tools I am familiar with, such as Google and Youtube, as well as adopt new skills and learn to use tools I am still not too familiar with, such as WordPress, Pinterest, Woordle, etc. These skills and tools will help me find new ways of learning and increase my knowledge of the digital world. This knowledge may very well come in handy when I move on to my career. When dealing with children, it is important to communicate effectively with parents so I feel the use of digital tools such as websites and social media would be a great way to not only communicate privately with parents, but also advertise my skills and achievements to gain the trust and business of parents and investors. Proper use of the knowledge and skills that I will acquire from this course will greatly assist me starting and promoting my own business in the future, because the internet is one of the best ways to reach people. Of course, if I am successful in completing my education and doing well in my career then a great financial situation will follow. And who knows, I might even find my future husband through a social media or dating site? After all, that is becoming quite common in today’s generation.

When creating my PLE I realized how many WebTools and internet sites I actually use on a daily basis. I learned that they have ultimately become a part of my life and are a part of how I do things. Whenever I have a question or am curious to know something, my first instinct is to “Google it” or message a friend. When I want to listen to new music, there is no need to buy CDs anymore. I can simply go on YouTube or SoundCloud and listen to whatever I want. We have access to so much information all the time and we do not even notice it because our generation has become so use to having it around. Basically, I learned that I am a digital native, as explained in our textbook reading last week.

From creating the word cloud, I learned that it is not difficult at all for a ‘native digital’ such as myself to get the hang of new tools. It came naturally, I almost did not even have to look at the instructions on Sakai to navigate through Woordle. I was also reminded how much I love pink!

Weekly Report & Reflection 1

There was a lot of information given to us the first week of this course. Luckily, it was all related and easy to understand. The main focus was on ‘digital footprints’ and ‘netiquette’. While doing the Digital Footprint Scavenger Hunt, I found at http://www.ask.com/wiki/Digital_footprint?lang=en that a digital footprint is basically the data that is left behind on on the internet by users, such as social media profiles, comments, blogs, pictures, etc. It is referred to as a ‘footprint’ because every time you post something on the internet you are leaving a permanent mark (in most cases). Once posted, you can never make something truly disappear because it has already been put out there and you never know it someone has seen it or saved it.

The other interesting topic was ‘netiquette’, which to be honest, I did not even know was a word. The Albion.com Netiquette Site explains that netiquette is basically network etiquette. So, in the same way that we abide by social etiquette with people in person, there are certain rules and manners for behaving properly online. This is a very significant topic, because proper understanding of netiquette would help to avoid cyberbullying, profanity, plagiarism, etc.

Aside from these two concepts, we learned quite a bit about blogs. According to our textbook reading, a blog is basically an online diary. Some people use blogs to write about personal everyday events and relationships, whereas other people may use blogs to express opinions about issues or share information and news. The article ‘Six Reasons Why Kids Should Know How to Blog’ by Barseghian, T. (2011, Aug.) was very interesting, because there is often a negative perspective of children using the internet, especially in terms of leaving ‘digital footprints’. But when taught the appropriate ways to use technology and the internet, it can actually be a positive thing for children. Barseghian, T. (2011, Aug.) explains that the six main positive outcomes of children learning to blog is that: 1) children learn to create positive digital footprints, 2) children learn to communicate using digital tools, 3) it creates transparency for parents and teachers so they can keep track of what their child is doing online, 4) it provides children with news ways of thinking about web tools, 5) children establish an effective digital citizenship, and 6) children can take pride in their work done online.

Personally, I do want a digital footprint. I mean, of course I already have one, but I don’t mind it. I think everyone should leave a mark for people to remember them by. I like the idea of the world being able to see me grow as a person, physically, intellectually, and emotionally. It is a great way for family and friends to feel connected to you, as well as for the world to know your story.

Of course, the digital footprint you leave behind should be a positive one. A positive digital footprint is one that portrays you in a good light. Following proper netiquette, refraining from posting anything on the internet that would cause you to get in trouble or make you look bad, and always keeping in mind that once something is on the internet you can never truly take it back is how you can create a positive digital footprint.

Introduction

So, this is my first blog post ever. Bare with me.

This blog is dedicated to a course called ‘Learning in Digital Contexts’ (ADED 1P93) that I am enrolled in. As a way of exploring new forms of technology/web2 we are asked to create a blog, as well as other profiles on social media/internet sites. This is the first course in which an instructor has asked us to do such assignments, so it definitely new but I like it. I think this will help us all learn in a different way, and open our minds to new possibilities in terms of how we can retrieve information and what kind of information we retrieve.

Before starting this course, I thought I was quite tech-savy. I own an Apple iPhone, a Macbook, an iPod, and so on. I have many social media profiles, most of which I use on a daily basis. Now, I feel as though there is still so much in the digital world that I have yet to discover and conquer.

I guess I’m officially a “blogger” now!
